Nashville & Davidson County Consumer & Compliance Alert (Verified 2026-10-29)
NASHVILLE TIP: Metro Water customers don't hire a tester for the annual test. MWS or its contractor, American Backflow Inspectors, tests every device and puts the $50 charge on your water bill. If a company offers to do your annual MWS test, check with MWS first (615-862-4872). You do need a plumber if your device fails. Ask for a rebuild-vs-replace quote, and have the repair done before the re-test date on your test form ($42 per re-test).

No customer filing: MWS or its contractor, American Backflow Inspectors (ABI), tests every device and bills $50 on your water bill $50 per device per annual inspection during normal business hours (billed on your MWS water bill); $42 per re-test after a failure; extra charges for after-hours inspections. Prices subject to change.
To meet state requirements, every backflow device on the Metro Water system must be inspected every year by Metro Water Services or its contractor. MWS schedules the inspections by geographic area, so customers don't book their own annual test. High-hazard commercial sites such as restaurants, medical facilities, automotive businesses, multi-story buildings and apartment complexes are tested every 12 months. Homes with a cross connection (pools, hot tubs, underground irrigation, fire sprinklers or an alternate water source) are also tested every 12 months. Buildings with three or more units count as commercial. New installations must pass an initial inspection (requested by the plumber through mws.ds@nashville.gov) before they are set up for annual inspections. Customers of other Davidson County water utilities, such as Madison Suburban Utility District, follow their own utility's backflow rules.
Non-Compliance Penalty
If an assembly fails, MWS sets a deadline to fix it that ranges from immediate disconnection to 90 days, depending on the hazard. Each re-test costs $42. Under Metro Code 15.12.070, after reasonable efforts to notify the owner, MWS physically disconnects water service to any property with an unapproved cross connection, and service is restored only once the cross connection is removed or an approved, working backflow device is installed. ABI's published procedure notifies the water district after a third failed test, which results in water service being discontinued.

RESTAURANT & COMMERCIAL KITCHEN FOG
Metro Water Services — Environmental Compliance Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) Program Rules
Grease interceptors must have the full contents of both chambers pumped at least every 90 days unless MWS approves otherwise. Interceptors with an operational digital monitoring device or alarm may be approved for a longer interval, but never longer than 180 days. Pump immediately once floating FOG and settled solids together reach 25% of the liquid depth (the "25 Percent Rule"). Grease traps (under 500 gallons) must be fully cleaned at least every 30 days, or every two weeks if FOG and solids are over 25%. Partial pumping and on-site pump-and-treat are not allowed. Every grease interceptor or trap must also pass an annual certification (Form A or Form B) by an MWS-certified inspector (an approved hauler or plumber), submitted to mws.sdc@nashville.gov.
Manifest & Hauler Rule
Use only an MWS Approved Grease Waste Hauler, meaning a company with the required permits and bonds that has signed the MWS Grease Waste Hauler Agreement. The hauler must pump the entire contents (FOG, food solids and water) and give you a manifest showing the date and time, gallons pumped, and your establishment's name and address. It must report any defects in writing and file a monthly pump report with MWS. Keep cleaning and maintenance records on site, in paper or digital form, for at least 3 years and show them on request. Repair missing components or defects within 30 days.
Violation Fines
Violations are enforced under the MWS Sewer Use Ordinance and the FSE Enforcement Response Guide. The food service establishment may have to reimburse MWS for labor, equipment, supplies and disposal costs, which can be added to its water and sewer bill. Failure to reimburse can lead to water service termination. Penalties can be appealed to the Waste Water Hearing Authority.

$50
Metro Water Services annual inspection: $50 per device during business hours, billed on the water bill (MWS Cross Connections Program page).
Overpriced Quote Alert: Metro Water's own annual test is $50 per device on your water bill, so MWS customers shouldn't pay a private company for the annual test. Repairs and rebuilds are separate. Get a written quote, and get a second opinion if one assembly repair runs well over a few hundred dollars. Non-compliance enforcement risk: MWS fixes range from immediate disconnection to 90 days, with a $42 charge per re-test; water service is disconnected for unapproved cross connections.
Price sources (checked Oct 2026):
Metro Water Services Cross Connections Program (nashville.gov): $50 per device annual inspection; $42 per re-test
Pump Co. subscriptions (pumpcotn.com): grease trap from $315/mo (varies by size); 1,000-gallon interceptor $900

Nashville & Davidson County, TN Backflow & Grease Trap FAQs
Direct answers sourced from Metro Water Services (MWS) — Cross Connection Control Program and Metro Water Services — Environmental Compliance Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) Program regulations.
Do I have to hire a backflow tester in Nashville?
Not if you're a Metro Water Services customer. MWS or its contractor, American Backflow Inspectors, tests every backflow device every year, schedules the tests by area, and adds $50 per device to your water bill. You'll only need a plumber if the device fails or needs installing. Questions: 615-862-4872 or mwscrossconnection@nashville.gov.
What happens if my backflow device fails the Metro Water test?
MWS gives you a deadline to fix it, from immediate disconnection to 90 days depending on the hazard level. Re-tests continue until the problem is fixed and cost $42 each. Have a plumber repair or rebuild the device before the re-test date. ABI's procedure notifies the water district after a third failed test, which results in water service being discontinued.
How often must Nashville restaurants pump grease interceptors?
Under the MWS FOG Policy, interceptors must be fully pumped at least every 90 days (or once FOG and solids reach 25%), and grease traps cleaned at least every 30 days. Use an MWS Approved Grease Waste Hauler, keep manifests for 3 years, and submit an annual Form A/Form B certification to mws.sdc@nashville.gov.
